Spreadsheet Curriculum

Level One (Second Grade)
Objective: Students will be able to make various types of charts in a spreadsheet program. Each lesson will have two parts: Charts based on given data, and charts based on student-collected data. Students will use both Microsoft Excel and OpenOffice Calc.
  • Bar Charts
  • Line Charts
  • Pie Charts
  • Mystery Charts (given data, students have to decide which type of graph to use).
Level 2 (Third Grade)
Objective Students will use a spreadsheet to perform basic calculations and create customized charts.
  • Adding up a column
  • Math homework machine
  • Running totals with add and subtract (spending spree)
  • Making a budget
  • Computing salary / large purchase
  • Charts that update themselves
  • Coloring charts your way
  • Really fancy charts
Level 3 (Fourth Grade)
Objective Students will use a spreadsheet to create and sort data in a simplified flat database. Students will also use a spreadsheet to perform calculations that involve more than one column of numbers.
  • Sorting records in a spreadsheet
  • A handy address book (student-made)
  • Calculating (and charting) average temperatures
  • Small business calculations
Level 4 (Fifth Grade)
Objective: Students will use built-in functions to calculate results and to format spreadsheets as desired.
  • Student gradebook (average, min, max)
  • Checkbook (neg. numbers red, slanted col. headings)

Level 5 (Sixth Grade)
Objective: Students will create spreadsheets with multiple pages that reference each other.
  • Getting pages to see each other
  • Bank account (checking, savings, total balance charted)
  • Stock Portfolio
