GIMP Assignments

Reading assignments are based on the online text "Grokking the GIMP" by Carey Bunks. The text is available on the Resource CD or online at gimp-savvy.com.

With all reading assignments, expect a quiz over the reading the next time you are in class.

Reading 2
Aug-21
In chapter 1 (GIMP Basics) read 1.1 through 1.3.
This assignment is 9 pages of reading.
Assignment 1 In GIMP, create three images using the drawing tools. Create a landscape, an abstract picture, and a still-life.

Homework: Read 1.4 - 1.9 in text. This is about 7 pages of reading.

Assignment 2 Download one picture from the Internet resources listed. Create 12 new copies of this image using different filters and script-fu. Combine these new images into a presentation (PowerPoint or Impress) that shows all your pictures and tells what filter or script-fu you used to create each one. Be prepared to present your show for the class.

Homework: Read 2.1 and 2.3 in the text. This is about 7 pages of reading.

Assignment 3 Create two composite pictures / collages. The collages must be a combination of at least four pictures, scaled appropriately. For example, you can create a "virtual fishtank" using pictures of various fish.

Homework: Read 2.4, 2.5, and 2.7 in the text. This is about 7 pages of reading.

Assignment 4 Create three images using scaling, rotation, and perspective. The images need to be a "shrinking object" image, a cartwheel image (a person or object spinning around), and a picture cube.

Homework: Read 9.1 in the text.

Assignment 5 Convert the shrinking object and cartwheel images into animated gifs. Create one more animated gif, then prepare a presentation that displays all three of your animations.
Assignment 6 Use the selection tools and the "stroke" function to create a collage of shapes. Your shapes must include at least one heart and one other Bezier curve based shape. Homework: Read section 3.3.
Assignment 7 Use the circuit render script-fu to create a circuit image. Use the "select by color" tool to edit the colors on this image. Then, create an offset checkboard pattern using the checkboard render and the selection-to-float tool. Put these images, along with your geometric shapes, into a slide show presentation. Homework: Read Section 4.1, "Channel Masks"
