1 Corinthians

Outline | Notes

Summary Outline

1:1-9 : Paul and Sosthenes to the church in Corinth, grace and peace. I thank God for the grace he gave you.
1:10-17 : Do not quarrel over who baptized whom. I thank God I baptized just a few of you.
1:18-31 : God’s word is foolish to those perishing, but it is his power to those being saved, for he shames the mighty so no man can boast.
2:1-5 : I came with spiritual power, not eloquence, so your faith would be in God, not man.
2:6-16 : We speak God's wisdom revealed by the Spirit; things foolish to the natural man, but appraised by the spiritual man.
3:1-9 : Your strife is fleshly, for we are merely God's servants, but God gives growth.
3:10-15 : I laid the foundation, and others build on it. Each man's work will be tested with fire.
3:16-17 : You are a temple of God. God will destroy whomever destroys his temple.
3:18-23 : The world's wisdom is foolishness, so do not boast, for all things belong to you.
4:1-5 : Let a man regard us as servants of Christ, yet God judges and will give us praise.
4:6-13 : I have spoken that you might not become arrogant, for though you are as kings we apostles have become as the scum of the earth.
4:14-21 : I write to admonish you as your father. I have sent Timothy to remind you of my ways and I will come to find out your power.
5:1-8 : I hear immorality is among you, and you are arrogant instead of removing the leaven from your midst, as you should do.
5:9-13 : Do not associate with any immoral “brother”, but let God judge outsiders.
6:1-11 : Why take law suits before unbelievers when saints will judge the world? For the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom.
6:12-20 : The body is God’s, do not join it to a harlot. Flee immorality; glorify God in the body.
7:1-7 : Because of immorality let each one have their own spouse, fulfilling their duty to them.
7:8-16 : It is good to remain unmarried, but better to marry than to burn. Do not leave your spouse, even if he is an unbeliever.
7:17-24 : Let each man walk in the condition he was called, whether circumcised or not, slave or free.
7:25-35 : I think it is good to remain as you are, married or single, but in view of the coming distress it may be best to remain single and devoted to God.
7:36-38 : If a man gives his virgin in marriage he does well, but if he not give her he does better.
7:39-40 : A wife is bound to her husband until he dies, then she may be happier to remain unmarried.
8:1-13 : We know idols are nothing and food is irrelevant, but if it makes a brother stumble, don't eat it.
9:1-18 : Evangelists have the right to reap material things. I do not make full use of my right, preaching voluntarily to offer the gospel without charge.
9:19-23 : Though I am free, I have become all things to all men that I might save some.
9:24-27 : Run to win, exercising self control..
10:1-13 : Our fathers all partook of spiritual food, yet God destroyed most of them as examples for us. Take heed lest you fall to similar temptations.
10:14-22 : Flee idolatry. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and that of demons.
10:23-33 : In reference to eating idol’s meat, seek the good of others. Do all to the glory of God giving no offense, as I please all that they may be saved.
11:1-16 : Man must not have head covered while praying, but woman must be covered, for woman comes from man, but all things come from God.
11:17-34 : I hear there is division when you meet to take Lord's Supper. Jesus gave the bread and cup to proclaim his death. Whoever partakes unworthily is guilty of the Lord's blood, so judge rightly.
12:1-11 : In spiritual gifts, the same spirit works various gifts, distributing them as he wills.
12:12-31 : As the body is one with many parts, so you are each members of Christ’s body.
13:1-13 : Without love I am nothing, for love never fails. Now we know in part, but then we will know and be known fully.
14:1-19 : Prophecy is better than speaking in a tongue no one understands, so if you speak in a tongue, pray that you may interpret.
14:20-25 : Tongues are a sign to unbelievers, prophecy a sign to believers. By hearing your prophecy, unbelievers know God is among you.
14:26-33 : Let all be done for edification. Take turns speaking in tongues and prophesying, for God is the author of peace, not confusion.
14:34-40 : Let women keep silent in churches. I write God’s command: desire prophesy, don't forbid tongues, and do all in an orderly manner.
15:1-11 : I make known the gospel, that Christ died, was buried, raised, and appeared to many, last of all to me, the least of the apostles.
15:12-19 : If Christ has been raised why do some say there is no resurrection? If there is no resurrection, we have no hope.

15:20-28 :
Christ is raised and in him all shall be made alive, each in his order. He must reign til death is abolished, then be subject to God.
15:29-34 : If the dead are not raised why be baptized for them, and why are we in danger? Do not be deceived, and stop sinning.

15:35-49 :
As God gives different glories to different bodies, so in the resurrection it is sown a perishable body and raised a spiritual body.
15:50-58 : We will all become immortal, then death will be swallowed up in victory through Christ. Be steadfast, your toil is not in vain.
16:1-9 : Take up a collection every week, and I will send your gift to Jerusalem. I plan to come, but will remain in Ephesus until Pentecost.

16:10-12 :
If Timothy comes send him on in peace. Apollos will come when he can.

16:13-24 :
Stand firm in the faith; do all in love. Greetings from churches in Asia. Grace to all.

Notes on 1 Corinthians

When was the book written?
The book itself lets us know that it was written while Paul was at Ephesus on his third journey, sometime before Pentecost in his last year there. We deduce this from the following clues:

  1. Paul says he is in Ephesus and will leave after Pentecost to go to Corinth (16:8)
  2. Paul has been to Corinth at least once already (1:16-17).
  3. Paul has recently sent Timothy to the folks in Corinth (4:17).
  4. Apollos has been in Corinth teaching the truth for a while (1:12, 3:6). This lets us know that this is Paul’s second trip to Ephesus instead of his first because Apollos’ teaching was corrected and he went to Corinth after Paul had already left Ephesus on his first visit there (Acts 18:24ff).

All of these clues concur with Acts 19 and 20, where Paul was in Ephesus, sent Timothy into Macedonia ahead of him (19:22), and later came to Greece and Macedonia (20:1-2).

Paul's Trip to Corinth
The book of Acts specifically mentions Paul going to Corinth only once, that being during his second journey. However, it is quite likely he went to Corinth during his third journey when he passed through Macedonia and spent three months in “Greece”. Acts 18 records that Paul first visited Corinth during his second journey. He came there from Athens, having been forced to flee the area around Thessalonica. For a time he stayed with Aquila and Priscilla, working as a tent-maker
